About PEMF Therapy

"All energy is electromagnetic in nature, and nothing happens in the body without an electromagnetic exchange between cells. When electromagnetic activity ceases, life ceases. Electromagnetic energy controls our chemistry. Disruption of this energy in cells causes impaired cell metabolism, and if our cells are not healthy, our body is not healthy, in whole or in part."- Dr. Pawluk

FAQs

What is PEMF?

Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Field therapy, also known as PEMF, is a drug-free, non-invasive, alternative treatment for pain relief. PEMF promotes accelerated healing and enhances the body’s overall performance by helping the energy output and regeneration of the body’s cells.

How does PEMF work?

Without an electromagnetic exchange between cells, nothing happens in the body. Human chemistry is controlled by natural electromagnetic energy. The cells are impaired when this electromagnetic energy is disrupted (for instance, from a bad diet, a small bruise to an injury, or merely from getting older). The body is not healthy if the cells are not healthy. When a complementary electromagnetic field is introduced into the body, healthy electromagnetic exchanges can be reestablished. This is the reason why PEMFs are considered to be extremely useful; they are capable of stimulating all levels of the body. When applied externally, the PEMF therapy completely penetrates the body and effects individual cells, organs, tissues, and thereby the entire body.

What are the potential benefits of PEMF?

Increased circulation

Enhanced muscle function

Decreased inflammation

Stress reduction

Bone healing

Blood oxygenation

Reducing muscle tension

Improving tissue healing

Reducing pain

Increasing energy

Improving clotting factors

Slowing the development of arthritis

Stimulating the immune system

Making soft tissue more flexible

Reducing arthritic changes

Are there contraindications?

PEMF therapy is not dangerous. There are no known significant side effects associated with the therapy, nor are there any reports of problems associated with excessive exposure to the electromagnetic fields generated by the device. However, certain precautions should be taken into account before proceeding with PEMF therapy. These precautions are recommended for safe therapy because there is not enough scientific evidence to show the side effects and contraindications of PEMF therapy. This is why we ask you to avoid applying this therapy if you have any of the conditions below: Pregnancy or Trying to conceive Active bleeding during menses or from a wound Tuberculosis Juvenile diabetes Acute viral diseases Mycosis Cardiopathy Tumours Severe arrhythmias Pacemaker wearers or any implanted electrical device Children Wearers of magnetisable prostheses Acute infections Epilepsy

How do I prepare for treatment?

At AcuHealth, PEMF can be utilized as a stand alone therapy or in combination with your acupuncture treatment. You will want to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing and remove all metal accessories from your body before relaxing into your session. As a stand alone therapy, PEMF sessions are approximately 25 minutes in duration. You should drink at least 32oz of water within 2 hours of your treatment. Your cells are primarily made of water, so staying hydrated before and after treatment can enhance the benefits of PEMF. Be sure to read the list of contraindication before each treatment and be sure to tell your practitioner about any changes in your medical history.

Does insurance cover PEMF?

At this time, PEMF is covered by insurance when specific devices are used in the treatment of wound healing. The therapy we utilize at AcuHealth is not covered by insurance. However, we routinely check for benefit and coding changes that may impact our clients. If you have specific questions on treatment cost and how to effectively implement PEMF into your healthcare routine, please call the office today!
